Essentials offers the key concepts, practice principles and frameworks in early intervention for speech pathologists working with infants with cerebral palsy and their families. Building on these essential knowledge and skills, the Core modules focus on Task-specific Training general principles and specific skills.

These essential and core modules are requirements to gain CPAdvance™ Accredited Practitioner, for occupational therapy.

In 2026, occupational therapists can look forward to the final release of modules including the remaining core modules of home programs, cognitive training and interactive reading, as well as a range of electives including action observation, equipment prescription, and sleep.

Modules included:

  • CPAdvance: An introduction
Upon completion, learners will understand the three key best practice principles of early intervention and its application to clinical scenarios.
  • Understanding CP in the early years
Upon completion, learners will have an established foundational knowledge of cerebral palsy including diagnostic pathways, types, typographies and prognostic trajectories.
  • Goal Setting
Upon completion, learners will develop knowledge and skills in using the Rehabilitation Evidence-Based Decision Making (READ) model when goal setting with families.
  • Approaches to assessment for infants with cerebral palsy
Upon completion, learners will demonstrate an understanding of appropriate assessments to administer in early intervention, how to interpret assessment information and provide assessment feedback using the SPIKE model.
  • Coaching with parents and caregivers
Upon completion, learners will gain skills in applying a coaching approach when working with families in early intervention.
  • Play
Upon completion, learners will have knowledge and skills required to apply play in therapeutic interventions.
  • Environmental Enrichment
Upon completion, learners will have the knowledge and skills to enhance therapeutic outcomes by optimising the infant’s environment.
  • Supporting Caregivers
Upon completion, learners will have the skills to embed strategies that support caregiver mental health and wellbeing into routine practice.
  • Task-specific Training: General principles
By completing this module, learners will demonstrate foundational knowledge of task-specific training, grounded in neuroplasticity and motor learning theory.
  • Task-specific Training: Reach
By completing this module, learners will demonstrate task-specific training knowledge and its application to the task of ‘reach’.
  • Task-specific Training: Grasp and release
By completing this module, learners will demonstrate task-specific training knowledge and its application to the tasks of ‘grasping’ and ‘releasing’.
  • Task-specific Training: Sitting
By completing this module, learners will demonstrate task-specific training knowledge and its application to sitting and sitting transitions.
  • Task-specific Training: Head control
By completing this module, learners will demonstrate task-specific training knowledge and its application to developing infant head control.
  • Task-specific Training: Floor mobility
By completing this module, learners will demonstrate task-specific training knowledge and its application to support infant floor mobilisation and exploration.
  • Task-specific Training: Upright mobility
By completing this module, learners will demonstrate task-specific training knowledge and its application to support infant mobilisation from an upright position, including cruising, walking and weight shifting.
  • Task-specific Training: Examination
This module invites learners to consolidate their learning from across all task-specific training modules through a series of case studies.

Duration:

Each module ranges from 45–90 minutes with additional resources and references provided for further learning.
